Careers

We recognise that young people are making career decisions about their futures in education, training and work in a challenging and complex environment. It is more important than ever that they receive high quality, impartial careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG). It is our goal to provide this for all our students throughout their time at Tomlinscote.

Our careers education and guidance programme aims to give students the knowledge, understanding and skills to plan and manage their progression through learning and into working life. Through one to one and group guidance sessions we help students to focus on:

  • Self-Development (helping students to understand themselves, recognise their potential and how they can shape their future)
  • Career Exploration (helping students to investigate opportunities in learning and work and how to use information effectively)
  • Career Management (helping students to plan, make decisions and develop a broad range of skills enabling them to manage their own careers and prepare themselves for employment and lifelong learning)

Tomlinscote has a strong track record of commitment and investment in careers. We have good relationships with local employers, who provide real world connections and support through a range of activities designed to inspire, inform and engage our students; including our annual Careers Day, work experience programme, employer and apprenticeship talks, visits and insight days. We encourage our students to participate in work taster events such as games and competitions as well as attending college and university talks and open days. We support students with their options choices in Year 9 and every Year 11 student is offered an indivudal career guidance interview.

We have excellent career resources available in the LRC and we recommend a range of careers websites for students to access. These resources provide students will up to date information about the variety of different career pathways (technical, vocational and academic) beyond Tomlinscote, such as apprenticeships, college, university and employment with on going training.

Our Careers team along with contributions and commitment from tutors, teachers, senior leadership team, employers and other training providers work to provide an engaging and inspiring range of activities to motivate, encourage and inform learners about future possibilities. We ensure students can make informed choices about their next steps whether that is a further training and education route or through an apprenticeship. The latest destination data for our students one year after finishing Key Stage 4 shows 98% of students are in education, employment or training destination compared with a national average of 92%.
