Educational Visits and Exchanges

All Tomlinscote students have regular opportunities to participate in international visits throughout their school career.  We are firmly committed to our exchange programme in the belief that exchanges enhance both linguistic and social skills as well as offering a unique cultural insight into life in another country.

We have particular schools in France, Germany, Spain, Hungary and Japan and group exchange visits of between 7 and 11 days are organised for year 9, 10 and 11 students.

Year 12 and 13 students also have the opportunity to take part in a two-week work experience abroad.  Accommodation is organised with families at our partner schools and work experience placements are available both at our partner schools and with employers in the vicinity of our partner schools.

The German Exchange

In 2007 we celebrated the tenth anniversary of our annual exchange, with the RBG, a "Gymnasium" (Grammar School) in Wendlingen-am-Neckar, near Stuttgart.  (see Homepage des Robert-Bosch-Gymnasiums in Wendlingen)

In the past ten years more than 700 students have benefited from exchange and study visits to the RBG, and firm, enduring friendships have been formed.

This year sees the third staff exchange between the two schools, through which staff from all curriculum areas have gained an insight into the German education system.

International Partnership with Hungary

In 2006, as part of our international remit as a Language College, Tomlinscote Mathematics department entered a partnership with the Trefort Ágoston Kéttannyelvü Középiskola in Budapest, a secondary school, in which Mathematics is taught through the medium of English.   The Headteacher, Mr. Varsóci Károly, his Deputy Head and two Mathematics staff visited Tomlinscote in May 2006 in order to set up a partnership between the two schools' Mathematics departments and to plan joint projects and visits for students in both schools.

In March 2007 a group of Year 11 and 12 Mathematics students, accompanied by Mrs. Glauert and Mr. Makris, spent five days in Budapest as guests of students of the Trefort school. Students had the opportunity of visiting the sights of the beautiful city of Budapest as well as forming friendships with their hosts, attending lessons at our partner school and collaborating on Mathematics projects. We now look forward to the return visit of the Hungarian students in September, when our students will have the opportunity to reciprocate the Hungarian hospitality.

Tomlinscote Language College has now invested in big-screen video-conferencing equipment and is hoping to be able to have regular link-ups with students and colleagues at its partner schools abroad from September 2007.
