Tomlinscote is very proud to have been awarded Investor in Careers status. We are the first school/college in England to have achieved this under the new, and very rigorous, assessment rules. This award is recognition of the whole school approach to careers education, advice and guidance.
In addition to a very comprehensive careers library offering resources on further education, higher education, apprenticeships and employment, all students have the opportunity to have a guidance interview, in confidence, with either the Head of Careers or the Connexions PA. Parents are also welcome to attend these interviews.
We invite many Employers in to talk to the students about the wealth of opportunities available to them and encourage staff and students to tell us what they would like to see in the resource centre and who they would like to speak to from the world of work.
Our Careers Day goes from strength to strength and planning has begun for the next one in February 2009.
Careers is also an integral part of the academic interviews and we ensure guidance is on hand for our Year 9s and 11s, should they require further support in order to help them make informed choices regarding their options.
Work experience is a vital part of our year 10 curriculum. Tomlinscote students have always excelled in the workplace and we receive glowing reports every year from Employers, many of whom offer our students jobs and apprenticeships, with some being sponsored through University! At this stage, we recommend students look on work experience as developing their Employability skills, e.g communication and teamwork, but in Years 12 and 13, we structure placements to link into their chosen career paths. However, even a negative experience has a positive result as the students realise this is not the area they wish to pursue.
Career Pathways - designed to assist Parents and Students with Future Aims
We work very closely with all the staff at Tomlinscote to ensure all our students receive, and have access to, the best possible advice and guidance in order for them to make well-informed, unbiased choices for their future.
