INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL AWARD SUCCESS FOR TOMLINSCOTE SCHOOL & SIXTH FORM COLLEGE , FRIMLEY
September 2009: Tomlinscote School& Sixth Form College in Frimley has been awarded the prestigious International School Award in recognition of bringing the wider world into the classroom.
On the 16 October representatives from Tomlinscote will attend a high-profile ceremony in London that recognises their outstanding work, and the successful winners will be presented their Awards by broadcaster and journalist George Alagiah.
On being notified that Tomlinscote school had received the award, Mrs. Danny Brown, Director of the Specialist Language College and International Co-ordinator said; “ All the staff, students and governors at Tomlinscote are delighted and proud to have received this award, which recognises the outstanding international work being done at Tomlinscote for many years, where the constant aim of staff and students from all curriculum areas is to enable every member of the school community, irrespective of the career pathways he or she may choose, to make a maximum contribution as a global citizen in a 21st Century global society.”
Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the DCSF International School Award seeks to celebrate, develop, recognise and accredit outstanding practice in the international dimensions of teaching and learning. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need to live and work as global citizens.
2009 has seen 700 schools accredited in the 75th anniversary year of the British Council. This is a record number of recipients and includes a wide range of schools from a variety of different backgrounds from across the UK.
The Award is now made available worldwide in countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus and Pakistan. Around 2000 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since the scheme began in 1999.
The ISA encourages and supports schools to develop the following:
- An international ethos embedded throughout the school
- A majority of pupils within the school impacted by and involved in international work
- Collaborative curriculum-based work with a number of partner schools
- Curriculum-based work across a range of subjects
- Year round international activity
- Involvement of the wider community
- Provides ideas for developing collaborative curriculum-based international work with partner schools

The DCSF International School Award was started in 1999 to recognise the schools leading the way in installing a global dimension into the learning experience of all children and young people. It is funded by the DCSF and managed by the British Council. The scheme is highlighted in the DCSF international strategy as ‘a major prize for excellence in this field’ and is open to all schools in the UK.
